All photos by Diane Covington-Carter
The 13th-century, walled Mayan archaeological site of Tulum Mexico, sits on a cliff above the sparkling Caribbean, the only Mayan ruins built on the coast.
Legend has it that the thriving seaport traded in turquoise and jade. We visited on a clear spring day.
Join us for a stroll through these remarkable ruins.
A Thick Limestone Wall
A thick limestone wall, (seven meters thick) surrounds the ruins on three sides, with the Caribbean creating the fourth protective barrier.
Who lived here?
Who lived here inside the walls? Was it just the priests, with peasants living outside the walls?
And what happened?
And what happened to the civilization that lived here?
Castillo
And what was the significance of the Castillo or castle?
An Air of Mystery
So many questions remain to be answered, surrounding the ruins in an air of mystery.
The Resident
Can you spot the iguana who has taken up residence in a ruin?
Two Critters
And then enjoy the two critters at the end, just outside of the gates.
